Background

 

The background to the establishment of Economic Forums is, and we quote Dr RV Simelane, the Special Adviser, Economics:

 

“When the Premier visited municipalities to propagate the concept of forming economic forums in municipalities, the idea was to:

·        Provide the community with a forum to get together and jointly discuss and determine for themselves what economic issues and opportunities exist in their municipal area.

·        Adopt a bottom up approach, characterized by color blindness and classlessness.

·        Enable residents, comprising business operators - big and small – hawkers and vendors, traditional healers, farmers, manufacturers, traders, formal and informal organizations, labor, churches, etc. to get together to improve their own living standards. 

·        The procedures regarding the operations of established forums entail:

-          Mayors (and Councilors) facilitating the holding of the meetings to set up a forum.

-          Forums liaising with operators on the ground with regard to assets, resources, opportunities as well as any problems or constraints facing each municipality/community.

-          Forums liaising with operators on the ground regarding mentoring, advice and relevant forms of intervention.

-          Forums sharing all relevant information with operators on the ground.

-          Forums advising Mayors and Councilors on assets, resources, opportunities and constraints of each municipality/community.

-          Mayors (as local government) liaising with Provincial government on finances, technical assistance, and any other form of relevant intervention.”

 

 

 

Vision

 

 

The Economic Forum is determined to be recognized as a body in Mkhondo, which lends assistance in the areas of wealth and job creation, improving the living standards of the community and seeks opportunities whereby the competitive advantages are exploited for the social and financial benefits of all community members.

 

 

 

Objectives

 

 

It is the objective of the Economic Forum and its members, on a non-financial reward basis to:

-         Promote economic growth and direct investments in the Mkhondo area with special emphasis on manufacturing, agriculture, tourism and mining.

-          Identify the needs of the community and business, and assist in seeking opportunities as well as to identify constraints facing each.

-          Help implement positive measures which would eliminate constraints that do not promote economic growth and social development

-          Assist in mobilizing relevant stakeholders: Community, Business, Municipality and Government if and when required or requested.

-         Assist in the creation of empowerment opportunities within the community through training and capacity building, thereby ensuring that people are able to operate and manage the assets that are created.

-         Promote local entrepreneurship in support of the activities of development projects in the short- and long-term, thereby ensuring sustainability.
