The Piet Retief area is situated on the escarpment giving a variety namely the Fire climax grasslands of potential savannah areas and the eastern mixed bushveld.This places this area in the unique position to be able to offer a large variety of habitats for a great number of different species of both fauna and flora.

In some areas such as Dusk to Dawn , Outdoor Heartbeat and Mkhunyane Eco Reserve more than 200 different species of birds have been identified.It is not unusual to see breeding Black Eagle at Outdoor Heartbeat while flyfishing  on the banks of the Assegai River.

A large variety of wild flowers including a number of orchids can be found on the Ngcaka and Assegai hiking trails.This is excellent yellow fish and trout fishing area. Fly fishing is a popular sport at Outdoor Heartbeat , fishing for yellow fish in the clear streams on a catch and release system.

A number of private game Reserves , namelt " Double H Game Reserve "  , " Warmbad Game Reserve ", " Mkhunyane Game Reserve " offer a great selection of different game species including the rare Oribi and leopard. Horse riding trails are offered at Warmbad Private Game Reserve. Witrivier Hot Water Baths can be visited within this reserve.
